Aims
To encourage all individuals to value and realise their creative potential and express themselves through Art, using a variety of materials, skills and processes. The subject will allow individuals to experiment and learn about artists and art movements as well as realising the importance of Art in modern society.
KS3
Year 8
Year 8s are introduced to the basic concepts of Art and how they are used. Drawing skills and the ability to think creatively are the cornerstones for all Art based projects so these areas form the basis of Key Stage 3 Art. Pupils undertake three major projects that allow them to engage creatively and look at Art in different ways while learning about new skills, materials, techniques and processes.
Year 9
In Year 9 students further their understanding of techniques and begin to explore more creatively themes in another three major Art projects. They will learn specific Art styles and learn about artists that dealt with themes in particular ways. Year 9 students start to learn more about the abstract nature of some Art styles and how they can use it in their own work.
Year 10
In Year 10 students learn some of the more technical aspects of Art and Design in perspective, design and public Art planning. They will learn how Art is viewed by the public and the importance Art has in our society.
KS4
At GCSE level Art students are expected to have a very keen interest and enthusiasm about the subject and a natural desire to want to learn more about it while improving all the time. They are allowed freedom to experiment with materials and develop thought processes and ideas on subjects and themes. They will focus on three main projects over the two-year course culminating in a timed examination where they will be given an unseen title and have to create a body of work around it.
GCSE Art and Design is a course that will allow Art students to grow as individuals and produce creative responses to themes.
Post 16
A level Art and Design is a direct continuation from GCSE Art in that the structure remains the same but the level of engagement, understanding and critical thinking expected is a lot higher. Students will have to produce two major projects, including a personal study dissertation based on an area of art they are particularly interested in.
The two-year course again will culminate in a timed examination on a given theme.
